Literacy Lessons: Level 2 – Consonant Blends & Trigraphs

Once your students have mastered the concepts taught in Literacy Lessons: Level 1, they will be ready to tackle reading and spelling words with consonant blends and trigraphs.

Consonant Blends are two or three consecutive consonants within a syllable that each represent a distinct sound. Blends appear frequently in the English language and are crucial for emergent readers and spellers to master.

Trigraphs are three letters that represent one sound. In this unit you will teach your students how to read and spell words with the ending trigraphs: -tch and -dge.

Literacy Lessons: Level 2 contains 10 lessons that cover all of the most common consonant blends in the English language and the ending trigraphs -tch and -dge.

Lesson Slides

Each lesson includes a set of interactive slides that serve as a guide for your teaching. The slides incorporate spiral review of previously taught concepts, phonemic awareness activities, an introduction to new consonant blends, applied practice reading, spelling, and identifying consonant blends within words, and vocabulary work.

Practice Sheets

The Literacy Lessons: Level 2 Printables are a great way to reinforce learning and provide students with additional, hands-on practice with new concepts. These can be used during or after lessons with teacher guidance or they can be sent home as homework. (I like to share these with the parents of students that I tutor to give them an idea of what we are working on and to ask them to do a few practice activities on the days that we do not meet).

The practice sheets for students include picture-word matching, spelling practice, word-reading fluency and sentence reading to help students solidify new learning and increase fluency.

Also included in the practice sheets are reading and spelling assessments to help you monitor progress and determine whether students are ready to move on to the next concept or need some reteaching/review.
